Watch: Construction chaos - trucks block traffic, parking spaces lost as earth beneath road crumbles

Saturday, 17 November 2018, 10:04 Last update: about 6 years ago

Traffic at the bottom of Birkirkara Hill in St Julian’s, where The Malta Independent offices are situated, is often being hindered by huge trucks that turn up to take excavation waste from a site earmarked for a complex of apartments and garages.

When trucks turn up on site together, as can be seen in the video, there is traffic chaos and dangerous situations as these huge vehicles are manoeuvred to enter the building site to pick up the excavation waste.

On the opposite side of the road, huge blocks have been placed on the road (seen also in video) to prevent drivers from parking. At least six parking spaces have been taken away.

This has happened because, in another construction site nearby, the excavation work has led to the earth beneath the road to crumble away (this can be seen in the video towards the end), meaning that the road above it has become dangerous.

Police yesterday called TMI employees who had their car parked in the area to remove their vehicle because of the danger. Instead, those huge concrete boulders were placed on the road to prevent others from parking there.
