Former Prime Minister Alfred Sant indicated this afternoon that he will be contesting the coming European Parliament election in May.

Sant has been keeping his cards close to his chest for many weeks, saying that he will make up his mind by the end of the month.

The Labour Party has announced a list of 10 candidates who will be representing it in May, but so far Sant is not officially one of them.

The head of Labour’s delegation to the EP this evening gave a strong indication that he will be on the ballot sheet.

In a post on Facebook, Sant referred to what Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said about him on One Radio this morning. Muscat said Sant is second to none in the way he analyses situations, encouraging him not to leave it to the last moment to make up his mind. The country needs a representative like Sant, Muscat said.

“In the circumstances it will be difficult to ignore (Muscat’s) words,” Sant wrote.

Sant was by far the most popular candidate in the 2014 election winning more than 48,000 first preferences.
