The last group of migrants who arrived on the MV Aquarius in August left for Germany yesterday, the government said.

This last departure concludes the process of the ad hoc solidariety mechanism which  was launched by the Prime Minister of Malta with  the agreement of other member states to resolve these humanitarian situations.

Malta thanked Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, and Portugal who collaborated in the ad hoc relocation mechanism..

In all 141 immigrants arrived in Malta on 15 August after being stranded at sea for many days as no country was willing to take them in until the deal that was brokered by PM Joseph Muscat.

The ship carried 97 males and 44 females mostly from Somalia and Eritrea, including 67 unaccompanied minors.
