MEP Candidate calls for wider benefit for tuna fishers

Small-scale Maltese fishermen should benefit from the increase in the tuna population Peter Agius, a PN MEP candidate, said in his latest vlog.

In a video comment from Marsaxlokk, Malta's largest fishing port, the MEP candidate says the latest headlines and investigations into tuna bribery allegations shouldn't divert our main focus to make sure that the Maltese long-lining tuna fishers would have their fair share from the 20% increase in the tuna quotas.

Aguis argues that although tuna farming should continue to be empowered, we must also sustain the livelihood of the Maltese fisherman. "We must ascertain that policies do not curtail the livelihood and the future of the 700 Maltese and Gozitan traditional fishermen whose catches were disproportionately restricted for tuna and swordfish"

"Continuous consultations with all stakeholders are a must. However only the fair distribution of quotas would ensure making the industry more attractive to young fishermen to make a living from fishing", he concludes.
