The 42th European Small Nations Weightlifting Tournament is set to take place on the 23rd of March in Malta. The meet will bring together the best national teams from Malta, Iceland, Cyprus, San Marino, Monaco and Luxembourg. Iceland, who are the reigning champions from 2018, will not be holding back this year as they are set to bring their leading weightlifters, some of which have competed numerous times in major championships such as the World and European Championships. Interestingly, they also have athletes who have competed in the CrossFit Games in the past. The Maltese team placed in 2nd place in 2018 at these same championships that were held in Reykjavik, Iceland. The mixed team made up of Yazmin Zammit Stevens, Roberta Tabona, Vlad Baldacchino, Anton Micallef and Shaun Ciantar are hoping to push further this year on home soil.
The Small Nations Championships will be held in conjunction with the Charles Mifsud International Open, where Malta will compete with another team against England, Ireland, Slovenia and Serbia. The 2ndMaltese team will be made up of Elisia Scicluna, Tenishia Thornthon, Rodmar Pulis, Matthew Camilleri and Martin Pisani.
These championships will not only award the best Team (2 women + 3 men), but also the top 3 individual men and women, and top women's due and men's trio. Men and women best lifters, best juniors and best youths. The competition will be held on the newly attained competition platform at the Cottonera Sports Complex on March 23rd from 9.45am.
