Falcons 58 - Overseas 0
In a one - sided affair that saw Falcons rack up ten unanswered tries, the match was a disappointing affair as a contest. The sheer dominance of the well-drilled Falcons machine bristling with quality attacking players restricted Overseas to a few crumbs of possession as they struggled to launch any kind of meaningful response.
From the first kick-off, Overseas tried to move the ball left and right in search of a way out of their own 22, but Falcons pressure led to a knock on and scrum, which they duly won. Beverie Sultana powered left before passing to Carole Casparis, who jinked inside before slinging the ball left for Donavellon Sladdon to gather and run in to open the scoring. Casparis missed the conversion.
Falcons doubled their score immediately after the restart, when Overseas fluffed the catch and Sultana scooped up the loose ball and cruised in to touch down unopposed. This time Casparis converted and the score moved to 12-0.
The next kick-off was long and Overseas grounded the ball inside their try-line for a 22 - metre dropout. The kick was snapped up by Katka Vrbacka, who released Deborah Cutajar down the right wing. Her blustering run took her through the tackle of Wendy Pace as she powered over to score.
The next restart saw Overseas desperately try to move out of their red zone from two set pieces, first a line-out and then a scrum, but Falcons pressure forced Brenda Caruana to run back towards her own line. She shovelled a pass to Claire Casha, who gave away possession by opting to kick straight back to the opposition. They string three quick passes together and Caroline Gafa added the final flourish to cross for the points.
There was still time for one more try when from the next scrum on the Overseas 22 metre line, some neat interplay between Casparis and Vrbacka down the left wing after the initial break from Sultana, ended with Casparis dotting down to take the score to 27 - 0 at half time.
The Falcons tryfest continued in the second half as Sairita Cassar, who up until then had been the only Overseas player to force the Falcons onto the back foot, was yellow-carded for a deliberate knock-on. With her feisty presence missing, Rodianne Bugeja was given a free run-in from the Falcons penalty as she sprinted 50 metres to the try line. Casparis converted and the score moved to 34-0.
Falcons turned the screw to maximise the one player advantage and two quick tries followed, first from Sultana and then a short-range effort from Barbara Caruana after Overseas again failed to clear their line with the ball in hand. Falcons were now running riot and Overseas had no answer to their blitz attack. Sultana showed a nice turn of speed to score down the right from 30 metres out, and Bugeja wrapped things up when they whipped the ball along the line from the final line-out and Casparis slipped a deft pass out of the tackle to Bugeja, who flew down the right to double her try tally. The game ended 58-0 in Falcons favour. A lacklustre performance by Overseas on the day, who had no answer to the firepower of a rampant Falcons outfit.
