In his vlog MEP Francis Zammit Dimech speaks about the health sector. He says that we must ensure that the best drugs are made available to those affected by ADHD. According to health professionals, changes in medicines are having a detrimental effect on children as well as adults. While medication available worldwide allows 95 per cent of children to be treated with one form of medicine or another, patients in Malta are struggling because of this change. Zammit Dimech said that after consulting with health professionals, it becomes evident that there is the need to consider reviewing the procurement system to ensure that Maltese professionals have the best drugs available for their patients.

This is not the first time that the Government failed to provide the best available medication. Earlier this year it was reported that the Government was seeking to purchase a vaccine that could offer less protection than the one placed recently on the market. "Other health professionals spoke to me regarding drugs that could make a difference in the daily lives of diabetic patients, which are still unavailable of the formulary." added Zammit Dimech.

While authorities are telling professionals that generic drugs are being used due to EU regulations on procurement, representatives of the European Commission confirmed that the European Union regulations do not prohibit member states from buying branded medicines. I believe that all patients must have access to latest generation medication and this is what I will continue push for.

Zammit Dimech added that confusion in the tendering process for the building of the health hub in Paola has led to patients and professionals experiencing exaggerated delays in improvements for primary care. Due to the confusion in the tendering process, the government was going to end up spending €4 million more of the taxpayer's money than it should.
