A 1-1 draw against Mosta in their last encounter yesterday was not enough for Qormi to save their Premier status.
The Yellow Blacks fought back gallantly after going behind through a James Brincat goal for Mosta and managed to equalise through Tensior Gusman. But moments later, they missed their chance when Micallef missed a penalty.
The draw left them on 20 points, four below St Andrews who will now face the third placed team in the first division to try and save their Premier status.
For this match, Qormi mentor Mario Muscat had to do without the suspended Romeu Romau while Mosta coach Mark Miller had all players at his disposal except for Morisco.
In the first half, Qormi enjoyed territorial superiority but the score was still blank at the interval whistle.
The Yellow Blacks created some scoring chances but goalie Moto was in fine form for Mosta.
The Blues also had their chances as they did not just stare at their opponents, but Roach missed a couple of good chances which came his way.
In the second half, Qormi again enjoyed the lion's share of the attacking, but they still found it difficult to penetrate, but at the end, it was Micallef's miss from the penalty spot that killed all their hopes, although the other results involving Senglea and St Andrews were certainly not in their favour.
In search of all the three points, Qormi surged into attack from the first whistle and on the 3rd minute, following a cornerkick, a Yankam shot was blocked by a Mosta defender.
In the 11th minute, from a Rozzi corner, a Lokando header was turned to corner with some difficulty by Moto.
At the other end, soon after, from a James Brincat cornerkick, a Tyrone Micallef header was well saved by Qormi goalie David Cassar.
In the 21st minute, it was Rozzi who had a freekick from the edge of the area going just over the bar.
Qormi insisted and three minutes later, Bangoura set Rozzi in the Mosta area, but the latter's effort was weak and wide of the target.
A minute later, Mosta goalie Moto was the great protagonist as he twice denied Qormi a goal saving close range shots from Bangoura and De Oliveira.
At the other end, on the 28th minute, Zachary Brincat went close for Mosta with a shot that went just over the bar.
In the 38th minute, it was Roach, for Mosta, who tried his luck from the angle, but the alert David Cassar turned to corner.
Four minutes later, at the other end, from a Micallef cross, it was Rozzi who hit the ball badly from an ideal position, the ball going over the bar.
Mosta missed the best chance before the interval when Roach hit a shot inches wide of the left post.
In the 49th minute, Mosta goalie Moto was again in action diving sideways to save a Yankam effort.
On 53 minutes, a Yankam cross went to Rozzi whose shot was saved in extremis by Moto before Bangoura could connect in front of goal.
Mosta took the lead on 62 minutes when James Brincat received a good ball from Ekani and beat two defenders before placing the ball into the Qormi net.
Qormi's reaction was feeble until Micallef on 70 minutes, shot low from outside the area, but Moto saved with ease.
In the 75th minute, Qormi missed a good chance through Micallef who headed wide from close in, but moments later Micallef went through into the area and crossed low for substitute Tensior Gusman to hit home and put the Yellow Blacks on track.
And it was not over yet. As two minutes later, the same Micallef was a great protagonist as he bustled his way into the Mosta area and was floored by Farrugia. Referee Zammit had no other option but to award the maximum penalty, but the same Micallef hit wide to the disbelief of his side's fans.
Mosta almost scored a winner three minutes from the end of normal time when Qormi goalie Cassar brought the house down with a fine save off a Roach humdinger.
