Senglea came from a goal down in the first half and with a fine display in the second forty five minutes managed to get the maximum points and save their status for the second consecutive year.
Senglea went into this match needing a win to put their minds at rest without waiting for the other matches outcome. They were coming from a defeat against Hibernians after four positive results.
Their opponents Birkirkara needed just to honour the fixture since they had nothing to play for. In fact the Stripes had lost their last three matches against Hibernians, Mosta and Qormi. But they surely wanted to prove a point under new coach John Buttigieg and end a disappointing season on a positive note.
The Stripes who had defeated Senglea by a 2-0 scoreline in the first round had to do without Cain Attard who was serving a one match suspension.
The first half lacked goal mouth actions since play was restricted to the midfield sector. In fact it was only the Birkirkara goal which came on 19 minutes that was worth a mention. A Michael Mifsud cross was met by Jorge Pereira who from close range tapped the ball into the net.
Senglea failed to react after this goal and were finding the going tough to break the opposing rearguard. Till the end of the first half neither team came forward with both goalkeepers never being tested. One expected more from Senglea who were in dire straits for the points at stake in order to save their status.
Only two minutes had elapsed from the beginning of the second half and Senglea drew level. Off a Venancio corner the ball hit Mbong's hand with the referee awarding the maximum penalty. From the resultant kick Diego Venancio converted.
On 53 minutes Senglea went near to take the lead when off a Gary Camilleri pass towards Leighton Grech the latter after making his way past the opposing defence shot wide. And in the 68th minute Volpini found Silva Santos but his acute shot was saved by an alert Hogg.
Fifteen minutes from the end of the match Senglea finally took the lead when Leighton Grech found Sidqy who headed towards Garcia with the latter finding the net from close range.
But Senglea sealed the issue six minutes from time when they were awarded a penalty which Leighton Grech converted.
Birkirkara made the score more respectable in the 87th minute finding the net through Michael Mifsud. The final whistle was greeted with celebration from the Senglea players and supporters who reached their aim for yet another year.
