Sliema Wanderers did their part in their last outing of the season, beating Pieta and hoping to get good news from the other stadiums.

They went close as they almost forced an eventual decider with Hamrun, but Moukanza's dramatic equaliser, not only shattered Valletta's championship dreams, but also left Sliema out of European soccer next season.

Sliema just missed the bus by a mere point and had to settle for a final fifth pace in the standings.

The match never reached high standards with all attention focussed on the big clash  between Valletta and Hamrun in the adjacent stadium.

Nevertheless Pieta gave a good account of themselves in their last Premier outing before making a quick return to First Division football next season.

Pieta should keep the solid local base of players available, who with this year's experience and some new foreign signing could quickly return to the top flight.

Sliema deserved their victory even though they never really set houses on fire. The Wanderers produced their best in the initial thirty minutes creating several scoring chances, and taking a one-goal lead by half-time.

On the resumption Sliema controlled the match adding another goal, with Pieta pulling one back but unable to avoid defeat in their last appearance.

On four minutes, Amehi, surely the best player on the field of play, had an attempt going just wide and a minute later the same Amehi passed towards Muchardi who shot wide when well placed.

On ten minutes a Michle Sansone header went over the bar. Ten minutes later Muchardi missed a sitter for Sliema when he failed to find the back of the net with an open goal at his mercy.

However on 27 minutes Sliema took a deserved lead when Ryan Fenech's freekick freed Amehi who drilled home after beating a defender.

On 34 minutes Sliema were unlucky when John Mintoff's effort finished against the upright.

In the second half the Wanderers lowered their tempo but still managed to double the score on 61 minutes when ex-Floriana Ignacio Varela found the back of the net with a low drive after a good move by Amehi.

Three minuter Pieta were back in business when Paul Chimezie beat the Sliema custodian with a fierce drive. Pieta tried to save the match but the Wanderers were never in real danger and protcted their slender lead, a lead which was rendered useless by Hamrun's dramatic equaliser.
