Cycling: Etienne Bonello and Marie Claire Aquilina win the first Time Trial Race of 2019

The Malta Cycling Federation time trial national championship started on Sunday 28 April 2019 with round one with the race at the Mriehel By-pass. A complete success from Team Greens as Etienne Bonello and Marie Claire Aquilina clock the fastest times in the Elite and ladies category.

In fact Etienne Bonello made his eight laps in 27:45.14. He was followed  respectively by Spiteri Wayne of Mosta AF Sign Studio CC that on his return he clocked in 27: 50.73 and  Christian Formosa of The Cyclists finished third in 27: 54.48.

Marie Claire Aquilina of Team Greens finished first in the Women's category when she made her eight laps in31:15.16. She was followed by teammate Lara Buttigieg in 32:46.00 and Margaret Seguna of Mosta AF Sign Studio CC in 34:27.23.

The Masters 40+ category was won by Ivan Zammit of Birkirkara St. Joseph SC in 29:54.95. Paul Zarb of The Cyclist ends up second in 30:30.91, while Ramon Grech of Agones SFC came third in 30:40.94.

The Masters 50+ category saw the success of Peter Horton (The Cyclist) in 30:46.08. Behind him came Kevin Muscat of Mosta AF Sign Studio CC (30:58.30) and Joseph Zammit of Team Greens (34:43.24).

The new Under-23 category was won by St. Bernard of Mosta AF Sign Studio CC in 29:01:48. Brandon Sultana of Gozo CC finished behind him in 29: 31.62 and Nicholas Attard Montalto of The Cyclists ended third in 30: 01:34.

Luke Borg The Cyclists continue where he left in the Tour of Malta as in his debut in the championships ended up winning in the Junior category at a time of 31:06.89. Behind him finished respectively two cyclists of Mosta AF Sign Studio CC, Sean Enriquez (32:18.68) and Malcolm Vassallo (32:21.63).

The Under-16 Boys category was won by Jacob Schembri of Mosta AF Sign Studio CC as he completed his six laps in 23:11.08. Behind him came his collegue Matthew Galea Pirotta (23:15.88) and Darren Sultana of Gozo CC (24: 34.20). Kristina Spiteri of The Cyclists (27: 56.66) won the same female category.

The Under-14 Boys category was won by Miguel Galea of The Cyclists CC completing his four laps in 17:15.20. Behind him clocked Jaeken Galea of Mosta AF Sign Studio CC (17:47.05) and Luca Vella of Birkirkara St. Joseph SC (18:11.00). Hannah Dandria of  Mosta AF Sign Studio CC won the same female category in 17:25.28. She was followed by Valentina Soler of the same club in 21:43.39.

The Under 12 Boys category was won by Jonas Micallef of Mosta AF Sign Studio CC making his one lap in 04:49.00. Behind him finished Luca Teuma of Mosta AF Sign Studio CC (05: 03:00) and Jake Vella of The Cyclists CC (06: 32.00). The same girls category was won by Martina Darmanin Tedesco of Mosta AF Sign Studio CC (04: 55.00) ahead of Kate Vella (Team Greens) in 08: 38.00.

At the end of races, John Zammit and Joe Bajada, President and General Secretary of the Malta Cycling Federation made the medals presentations to the winners.

The next race will be at 7.30am on Sunday 12 May 2019, the first of three Championship Road Race in San Martin.
