In his vlog MEP Zammit Dimech that according to Eurostat data, Malta has wages which are below EU average and registered the lowest increase in wages across the EU. Furthermore, Eurostat data shows that the rate of students between 30 and 34 years old in tertiary education is also quite low - Malta is eight places from the bottom. One expects Malta to fare far better than this.

As a result Malta has a high percentage of unskilled labour force, among the highest in Europe according to a top official at JobsPlus and thus they face competition posed by cheap labour. Zammit Dimech added that workers were being further impacted due to the rise in the cost of living including essential products.

Zammit Dimech concluded that we need to ensure that we are offering our students the highest quality education and the necessary skills to attract new economic sectors that employ high skilled workers with a better pay. He said that the government needs to act swiftly to tackle the challenges it created with its own policies.
