FA Trophy: Three quarterfinals being played this evening

Three of the four quarterfinals are being played this evening. The remaining quarterfinal is to be played next Wednesday.

The matches had been scheduled to be played on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 February, but were postponed due to inclement weather.

The match between Gżira and Pieta had to be abandoned two minutes from time following a heavy hail storm that hit the island on that Saturday afternoon, The result stood at 1-1 with both teams resigned to playing an extra 30 minutes to determine the first semifinalist.

The snow storm forced the abandonment of the game with the Mosta v. Birkirkara clash also being postponed. Moreover, the other two matches which were to be played on the following day - Tarxien v Balzan and Hibernians v Valletta - also had to be postponed due to inclement weather.

The match between Pietà Hotspurs and Gżira United, abandoned in the 89th minute, will now resume this evening at 7pm at the National Stadium.

In accordance with Article 15 (iv) of the Malta FA Competition Rules, the match will resume from the point in time of the match when it was abandoned or discontinued, and the remaining match time must be played.

If no score is registered in the remaining time to be played or better still, the result remains 1-1, extra time will have to be played to be followed by penalties.

Since that day, a lot has changed with regard to both teams, apart from the fact that the League has come to an end and only tomorrow's decider for the title remains to be played.

Gzira, for example, were still in with a fighting chance for the title, but have now contented themselves with the third place and a berth in next season's Europa League.

On the other hand, Pieta have passed through a miserable time which saw them ending the competition as wooden spoonists. Consequently they were the first team to be automatically relegated to next year's First Division.

In the other match this evening, Birkirkara take on Mosta in what should be a thrilling encounter.

The Stripes finished the League campaign on a very negative note. Four defeats in a row against Hibernians, Mosta, Qormi and Senglea, saw them losing out on that chance of finishing 4th for a potential berth in the Europa League via the Premier League.

But they still have this final chance now, but only if they finish as winners of the competition.

Coach John Buttigieg had a difficult start with two consecutive defeats, but is now obviously eager to lead the side through better times.

Mosta defeated the Stripes in a league match a few weeks ago and they will also be aiming to repeat the dose.

On that day, the Blues had been overwhelmed by the Stripes in the first half, but the latter missed innumerable chances, scoring just one goal.

And that proved not enough as Mosta came back fighting in the second half to turn the tables on their opponents for a 2-1 win.

In the other match this evening, Tarxien and Balzan cross swords with a Last Four place at stake.

Balzan might be considered as favourites due to their better placing in the League standings.

But in such a match as that of this evening, they must be on full alert.

Balzan were crushed 5-0 by Hibernians in their last league encounter last weekend and will certainly have to show much better form today if they are to outgun Tarxien.

The latter cannot be taken for granted. They have provided stiff opposition to most of the top teams, except on a few occasions.

The final fourth quarterfinal between Valletta and Hibernians will be played next Wednesday because of the Premier League decider being played tomorrow.
