Electronic counting: Electoral Commission replies to TMI report

Friday, 24 May 2019, 10:36 Last update: about 6 years ago

The Electoral Commission this morning reacted to a news report we carried on our front page on Thursday, and later uploaded online, where we sought the reaction of Chief Electoral Commissioner Joseph Church to the incorrect turnout figures released by the commission on Saturday, as well as concerns that were relayed to us about the resources of the same commission.

In its statement, the Electoral Commission condemned the “attempts” to cast doubt on the new electronic counting system. We wish to make it clear that, at no point did we say that the error was made by the new vote counting system", the commission said.

We quoted Mr Church word for word, where he simply said that the mistake was made by “the system,” without making a distinction between one system and another. We also quoted the Chief Electoral Commissioner where he said that he is confident that the commission can handle two national elections simultaneously.

There was no attempt from our part to discredit the work of the commission. As a newsroom, we reported concerns that were relayed to us and duly sought the reaction of the commissioner, which was reproduced faithfully.
