The Tennis tournament finally kicked off, but the rain still dominated the day and several matches had to be rained off for the second consecutive day.
However two Maltese managed to get in action, winning their matches to move to the next round. Matthew Asciak defeated Rodeiro Stetson of Andorra in two straight sets 6-3, 6-2, with Asciak always in command.
In the women’s singles Elaine Genovese started against Maria Siopacha of Cyprus, a gold medallist two years ago in the doubles competition. The match however had to be halted after the first game as the rain intensified to a torrential one.
After several hours the match continued in the afternoon with Elaine Genovese winning easily 6-3, 6-2.
The two other Maltese players, Francesca Curmi and Omar Sudzuka have still to go in action, hopefully today, but the rain is also forcasted to continue tomorrow. It’s a race against time for the organising team as they are in search for an indoor court that could be used.
Organisers are even considering the scrapping of the doubles tournament, or reducing the sets to the first four games instead of the usual six.
