GSSE 2019, Montenegro: Andrew Chetcuti gives Malta last silver medal from the pool

Andrew Chetcuti won the silver medal in the 50m butterfly in the final day of the swimming competitions, to give Malta the tenth medal from the swimming competitions for a very positive showing.

Chetcuti finished second clocking 24.61, with Harry Stacey finishing sixth with 25.67. Earlier in the yesterday’s last programme Andrew Chetcuti and Harry Stacey took part in the 50m freestyle, with both just missing the bronze medal clocking 23.22, finishing joint fourth.

Francesca Falzon Young took part in three 50m races. In the freestyle she clocked 27.56 and in the 50m butterfly she managed 29.94. In the 50m backstroke she finished in fifth place with 31.05.

In the men’s 50m backstroke Thomas Wareing placed ninth, but set a new personal best with 28.53, trimming 0.2 seconds off his previous best time.

Mya Azzopardi obtained a new national record, her second one in Podgorica when she swam the 400m medley in 5.06.06, trimming 0.36 from the previous national record.

In the men’s 400m medley Mikhail Umnov finished fifth with 4.44.61. In other races Michael Stafrace finished sixth in the 100m breaststroke with 1.06.30, and in the women’s 100m breaststroke Alexandra McGonigle clocked 1.15.99 finishing fifth, with Amy Micallef sixth with 1.16.27.

In the men’s 200m Matthew Galea clocked 1.57.53 and Dylan Cachia 1.58.74. In the women’s race, Sasha Gatt completed the distance in 2:12.96 while Michee Van Rooyen was fifth overall in 2:07.12.

The swimming programme came to an end with two 4x100m medlay events. The female team made up of Amy Micallef, Mya Azzopardi, Martina Valletta and Francesca Falzon Young finished fifth with 4.32.34 and the men’s team made up of Harry Stacey, Mikhail Umnov, Matthew Galea and Michael Stafrace also finished fifth with 3.51.81
