GSSE 2019, Montenegro: Elaine Genovese through to ladies' single tennis semifinals

Chris Cassar Thursday, 30 May 2019, 21:59 Last update: about 7 years ago

Elaine Genovese qualified to the semifinals of the ladies singles competition beating Monaco’s Danoe Petroula 6-2, 6-3, and now plays today in the semifinal.

However this was the only good news of the tennis tournament for the Maltese, as the bright weather finally made it possible for the tennis matches to go ahead in Budva.

In the other ladies singles quarter final Francesca Curmi lost against Silvie Marie Zuend of Liechtenstein 2-6, 6-1, 2-6. The two ladies then teamed up to beat Iceland in the quarter final.

Bad news in the men’s competition with Omar Sudzuka losing against Birkir Gunnarson of Iceland 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. In the other quarter final Matthew Asciak lost against Marco De Rossi of San Marino 6-1, 3-6, 1-4, with Matthew Asciak retiring in the third set after injuring his hamstring.

This hindered the men’s doubles match, and although Matthew Asciak teamed up with Omar Sudzuka to face the pair from Montenegro, he was not at his best, hardly able to run at times and Montenegro easily defeated the Maltese pair 6-2, 6-1.
