GSSE 2019, Montenegro: Saywell’s victories not enough as men's judo team is eliminated

The men’s judo team was eliminated from the competition after suffering defeats against Liechtenstein in the quarter finals and against Luxembourg in the repechage. Malta lost both bouts 2-1, and in both cases Jeremy Saywell gave Malta the points.

It was an overall disappointing performance by the Maltese judokas who can surely do better. Coach Denis Braidotti was disappointed but optimistic on the other hand. He said that this new project only started five months ago and it takes time to see the desired results.

He said that the squad has potential but it is the mentality that has to changed. He said that the Maltese judokas have to eliminate their inferiority complex, to start with and build on their technical abilities which have a lot of potential.

Saywell gave Malta the first points against Liechtenstein beating Frei with an Ippon with 2.66 to go. However in the following bouts Clive Camilleri was beaten by Mehser in the -81kg category with an Ippon, and Isaac Bezzina was also defeated by an Ippon by Schwendinger.

In the repechage Malta faced Luxembourg, and here again the match followed the same pattern. Jeremy Saywell beat Schmit with an Ippon, but again both Clive Camilleri and Isaac Bezzina lost with an Ippon against Dos Santos and Barboni respectively.
