GSSE 2019, Montenegro: Lisa Marie Bezzina and Jordan Gusman strike gold again

Lisa Marie Bezzina won her second gold yesterday in the 10,000m, after her victory in the 5,000m two days ago. Lisa Marie Bezzina finished with a time of 35:39.01 beating Dagmara Anna Handzlik of Cyprus who won silver and Montenegro's Sladana Perunovic who won the bronze.

The second gold medal, also the second one in these Games, came from Jordan Daniel Gusman who won the 10,000m in 29:49.43, distancing himself from second placed Marcos Sanza Arranz of Andorra by a minute and 3 seconds. Iceland's Arnar Petursson finished in third place.

Malta's Luke Micallef the other Maltese competitor in this category, finished seventh with 32:59.30.

Malta's Roberta Schembri finished in sixth place with 38:11.22.

In the women's triple jump, Claire Rose Azzopardi won the silver medal with a jump of 12.3m. The gold went to Montenegro's Ljiljana Matovic with a jump of 12.82m. The other Maltese competitor Rebecca Sare finished in fifth place with a jump of 11.86m. For Azzopardi this is not the first medal in the Small Nations Games but the first in athletics. In 2015 Azzopardi won a silver and a bronze in gymnastics in the individual floor and with the women's team.

In the men's triple jump Malta grabbed another silver medal with Ian Paul Grech who had a jump of 15.55m. Longinos Achilleos of Cyprus won the gold with a jump of 15.8m and the bronze also went to Cyprus with Grigoris Nikolaou having a jump 2cms shorter than that of Ian Paul Grech.

Charlotte Wingfield disappointed in the 200m final finishing in fourth place with 24.66, just missing the bronze by 0.13 seconds.

In the women's 4x100m relay, Malta clocked 47.92 finishing fourth behind Cyprus, Iceland and Luxembourg. Malta's relay team was made up of Claire Rose Azzopardi, Annalise Vassallo, Sarah Busuttil and Charlotte Wingfield. Malta din not take part in the men's competition.
