The Maltese girls Elaine Genovese and Francesca Curmi made it to the final of the women's doubles beating the pair from Montenegro 6-3, 7-6, to make sure of at least the silver medal. Today the Maltese girls will face the Cyprus pair who in the first semifinal defeated Luxembourg 6-3, 7-5.
Earlier in the day Elaine Genovese lost in the semifinal against Eleonora Anne-Sophie Rbis Molinaro Simon of Luxembourg 3-6, 0-6, and had to settle for the bronze medal.
Back to the doubles semifinal the Maltese girls were in splendid form with Elaine Genovese having a great performance with Francesca Curmi winning some great points at the net. It was a great effort from the girls, especially in the second set when all seemed lost.
Finally on a bright and hot sunny day, the Maltese girls dominated the first, breaking their opponents early in the set and never looking back with some great shots from the base line. Malta won the first set 6-3.
In the second set the Montenegro pair started on a high note and twice broke our service to lead 5-2, looking set to force the third decisive set. However the Maltese had other ideas and started a remarkable comeback turning the tide from 2-5 to 6-5, also losing a match-point in the twelfth game, with Montenegro forcing the tie-break.
