Mauro Anastasi and Sue Abela are the BOV Bowling National Champions.
Mauro Anastasi became the first Maltese bowler to ever win 5 national championships. Starting the third and final day of the competition in third place, trailing Miguel Xuereb and Mark Spiteri, a fired up Anastais fired a salvo of 234, 257 and 227 to race to the lead, with Spiteri trying to stay in the hunt as Xuereb lost ground.
From then on, Anastasi made sure to keep Spiteri at bay and after rolling a 243 in the penultimate game, Spiteri knew it was over and had to be content with a comfortable 2nd place. 3rd place was a superbly fought battle between Dennis Mercieca and the talented 17 year old Matthew Magro, with Mercieca just clinching it by 6 pins thanks to a double strike in the very last frame of the last game.
Abela made her intentions very clear on the last day as she rolled a strong 246 in game one against Cynthia Frendo Duca's opening 184, and from then on it was clear that this was going to go Abela's way as she averaged 216 on this last day to win by over 200 pins. 2nd place went to Frendo Duca who fought off a valiant Tiziana Carannante's challenge. Abela thus regained the championship she missed out on last year, her 23rd National Championship, an astounding record that will unlikely ever be broken.
