The European Championship 2019 was organised last weekend in Belgium. Among the countries who participated were, Italy, Greece, Spain, Belgium, France, Austria, Germany and Portugal. The Maltese contingent consisted of six players led by Mr Jason Pisani.
The individual competitions were held on Saturday. In the Open Category we had only one participant Massimo Cremona, who unfortunately did not pass the group stage. The Belgian player Florian Giaux was the winner of the Open Category.
In the Veteran category we had a Maltese winner. Mario Camilleri was awarded the title of European Champion in the Veteran category, after winning the final against the Greek player Kostantinos Kechris with the score of 1-0. Camilleri played the semi-final against the Italian Mario Corradi 2-1. Charlie Aquilina, Jason Pisani and John Zammit were also playing in this category. Charlie Aquilina made it to the quarter final, when he lost against the Italian Pasquale Torano by 'sudden death' 2-1. Jason Pisani made it to the last sixteen and unfortunately John Zammit did not pass the group stage.
Jurgen Balzan made it to the semi-final, when he was competing in the Under 19 category. He lost the semi-final against the winner of this category, the Greek Dimitris Dimopolous 3-0.
The team competitions were held on Sunday and Malta was in group with Austria, Germany and Belgium. The Veteran Category Malta Team was composed of Charlie Aquilina, Jason Pisani, Mario Camilleri, Massimo Cremona and John Zammit. The Maltese team passed the group and made it to the semi-final. They lost against the Italian team 1-1 with one goal difference.
Malta came back with three honours, one gold awarded to Mario Camilleri, winner of the individual Veteran category, bronze to Jurgen Balzan semi-finalist in the individual Under 19 category and bronze to the Malta Veteran team.
Well done to all the Maltese contingent!
