Malta – with Cyprus – is hottest country in Europe today

Malta recorded the hottest temperature in Europe on Tuesday, a scorching 38˚C, with a feel like temperature of 41 degrees.

The temperature is expected to be similar tomorrow Wednesday, gradually dropping to a more acceptable 34 degrees on Thursday, according to the Met Office.

Health authorities are advising the public to avoid being exposed in the sun for long periods and to drink regularly.

At particular risk are young children, pregnant women and the elderly.

The heat wave is the third Malta has experienced this year. Temperatures rose to 37˚C in early June and to 38˚C at the end of the month.
