A somewhat controversial goal midway through the second half put paid to Hibs' hopes of obtaining a win to see them advancing into the next round.

The Belarusians won the tie 2-0 on aggregate, having also won the first leg at home with a 1-0 score last week.

The first half was somewhat entertaining with both sides creating good chances, but both being thwarted by some excellent goalkeeping from the two custodians.

The Paolites started in an aggressive manner and quickly showed their intentions of scoring an early goal forcing the visiting goalie to a great save off a Kristensen shot.

Later the Shakhtyor goalie was also a protagonist as he twice denied Mbong.

Even Hibs goalie Jovicic was a protagonist as he also had to effect two good saves to thwart the Belarus side, especially when they were playing with 10 men, soon after Selyava was shown a red card by the Kazakhstan official, Mr Atazhanov.

In the second half, the Paolites were once again full of vigour at the start as they pressed for a goal, but they missed the chances which came their way.

And they paid dearly for those lapses as Shakhtyor scored what appeared to be a somewhat controversial goal, even if the Paolites did not protest much on the award of the goal.

They failed to take advantage of their numerical superiority and Shakhtyor managed to take a 2-0 aggregate lead. Later Hibs also lost their numerical superiority as defender Apap was dismissed following a bad foul.

Hibs opened strongly on attack and in the first minute, Bjorn Kristensen fired a great shot from 20 metres but was denied by goalie Klimovich who flew sideways to save spectacularly.

On eight minutes, the visitors threatened through Elis Bakaj who failed to connect to a cross from Yuri Kovalev when in front of goal.

In the 20th minute, Hibs also threatened seriously as goalie Klimovich twice denied Joseph Mbong with good saves in the space of a few seconds.

Moments later, following a corner from the right, a shot by Dunstan Vella went over the bar.

The Belarusians suffered a setback in the 34th minute when Aleksandr Selyava was shown a red card following a rough tackle on Hibs captain Kristensen.

On the 39th minute, Hibs goalie Jovicic saved his side twice successively saving close range shots from Bakaj and Kovalev.

In the 49th minute, Hibernians protested for a penalty when a Vella cross appeared to have been handled by a Shakhtyor defender in the area, but the official, close to the action, waved play on.

Hibs insisted on attack and in the 53rd minute, it was Leandro Nanni who had a fine rising shot just missing the target.

In the 61st minute, Grech served Mbong on the edge of the area, but the latter's shot went over the bar.

Three minutes later, Hibernians were stunned when Nikita Tatarkov - he had only been on the pitch a few seconds - received the ball on the left and his cross-shot beat friend and foe and hit the crossbar before being picked up by goalie Jovicic. The assistant referee signalled that the ball had crossed the line with the official convalidating the point. From the press box, one could not ascertain whether the ball had crossed over the goal-line, but even Hibs failed to protest strongly.

Hibs' reply arrived on the 68th minute with a shot by Nanni being saved by Klimovich.

In the 73rd minute, the two teams were back on parity as Hibs defender Ferdinando Apap was also shown a red card after a bad foul on Yuri Kovalev.

Till the end, Shakhtyor controlled with ease as Hibernians appeared to be a tired side in the final minutes.
