Forty million contraband cigarettes were discovered in four containers at Malta Freeport, the Customs Department said in a statement.

Each container had 10 million cigarettes and originated from Piraeus in Greece. The containers were on their way to Misurata in Libya.

Representatives of the brands of cigarettes confirmed the illegality of the packets.
