Nearly 400,000 licensed cars in Malta; 82 new licences per day – NSO

By the end of June this year, the stock of licensed motor vehicles stood at 391,914, an increase of 3.3 per cent over the same period in 2018, the NSO said today.

Administrative data obtained from Transport Malta shows that, by the end of June this year, the stock of licensed motor vehicles stood at 391,914.

Out of this total, 77.6 per cent were passenger cars, 13.6 per cent were commercial vehicles, 7.6 per cent were motorcycles/quadricycles and AllTerrain Vehicles (ATVs), while buses and minibuses amounted to less than one per cent.

During the quarter under review, the stock of licensed vehicles increased at a net average rate of 45 vehicles per day.

Newly licensed vehicles put on the road during the period under review amounted to 7,439. The majority of the newly licensed vehicles, 5,272 or 70.9 per cent of the total, were passenger cars, followed by motorcycles with 1,116 or 15.0 per cent. Newly licensed ‘new’ motor vehicles amounted to 3,670 or 49.3 per cent of the total, whereas newly licensed ‘used’ motor vehicles totalled 3,769 or 50.7 per cent. 

An average of 82 vehicles per day was newly licensed during the quarter under review. Vehicles under restriction.

During the second quarter of this year, 7,503 vehicles were taken off the roads due to a restriction. Out of these, 34.3 per cent were put for resale, 32.4 per cent were scrapped, while 31.1 per cent were garaged. Vehicles that had their restriction ending during the quarter under review totalled 4,170. The majority were recorded as having been put for resale (60.0 per cent) or garaged (39.1 per cent).

As at the end of June this year, 234,822 vehicles or 59.9 per cent of the total were petrol-powered engines. Diesel-powered vehicles reached 152,266 or 38.9 per cent of the total. Electric and hybrid vehicles accounted for 0.8 per cent of the entire stock, with a total of 3,280 vehicles.
