PL MEP says changing the fuel we use is better than discussing fuel price

Friday, 2 August 2019, 20:01 Last update: about 7 years ago

PL MEP Josianne Cutajar has said that, while discussing the price of fuel is good, the country's aim should be to use cleaner energy sources.

She was speaking in the wake of the 5c increase in fuel prices. She said that while she understands those who argue that this increase makes a difference, energy based on oil depends on a volatile market that simply leaves an impact on fuel prices.

The most important thing, she said, is that government's goal is to keep the rates at the lowest possible. "In fact, Maltese consumers are benefitting from fuel prices that are lower than the EU average."

"If we want to improve air quality, and with that our lives, the energy sources need to change and become cleaner," she said

Cutajar said that over the past years Malta made leaps and strides forward in terms of electricity generation, switching from heavy fuel oil to gas. "Now the time has come to look at cleaner and more efficient transport methods, and above all if we continue using private vehicles, that they cause less environmental harm."
