The MUZA has ended up being a building that represents the incompetence of the Culture Ministry, rather than the V-18 legacy, PN MP Therese Comodini Cachia said in a statement.

It was recently reported that more than 100 paintings were removed from the National Museum of Fine Arts due to mould, In comments to TVM, MUZA curator Kenneth Cassar said that the paintings were removed so that no damage will be done to them. He said that the mould situation is not alarming and that they will be placed back in the coming weeks. He said that this is not the usual mould seen in homes, but mould which is not even visible.

In her statement, Comodini Cachia said that while Culture Minister Owen Bonnici, as well as Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, had called MUZA a gift to the Maltese people during its opening, "their incompetence in the culture sector and political arrogance resulted in a dangerous situation for national treasures."

"While Bonnici boasts about a system that controls the air inside the building, he continued to ignore advice from experts regarding the risks he was putting part of the national art collection in."

"Until Monday morning, one could still see the structural works going on inside the building, even though it had been opened to the public. While experts within the culture sector do not believe the minister's excuses, there is only slight mould that one can expect, they believe the this situation is a consequence of Bonnici's decision to ignore technical advice to satisfy political plans."

The Opposition asked for Bonnici to guarantee that no damage to the art that was already removed from the museum, and to the paintings and sculptures that are still inside.
