MPs Godfrey and Marlene Farrugia have resigned from Partit Demokratiku to make space for new people.

They will be keeping their Parliamentary seats until the end of the legislature but will not re-contest any elections.

In a letter to the PD executive, the MPs said they have always taken political decisions in a spirit of loyalty towards the country.

“We need to ensure that the country remains democratic, where the rule of law and social justice remain the main pillars of politics. In order for democracy to stay alive, there needs to be a political force that brings together all movements that share a vision of sustainable economics, a social and environmental vision and respect towards humanity.”

The Farrugias said they believe that the PD can evolve further, even if it is rebuilt from scratch, and become the party that the country truly needs, giving the electorate a better choice at the next general elections.

In order for the party to evolve, it needs to have people who are relatively new to the political scene and distance itself from established parties.

“With immediate effect, and with a sense of loyalty towards the country and the party, we are resigning from Partit Demokratiku with immediate effect.”

The Farrugias said they would serve in Parliament until the end of this legislature, which will be their last one.
