Over 400 patients using medical cannabis in Malta

Tuesday, 5 November 2019, 18:10 Last update: about 6 years ago

There are over 400 patients using medical cannabis in Malta, Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Chris Fearne said today.

Fearne was addressing the Medical Cannabis World forum.

This sector, he said, is facing three challenges. The first revolves around educating patients on its use, he said. "Patiet security must remain first in mind for whatever we do."

The second challenge, he said, is to have enough research and clinical evidence on medicinal cannabis. "Today we have 32 doctors who have prescribed this kind of medicine to their patients, but this is a small number when compared to the number of doctors in the country. We need more research and evidence so that more medical professionals will trust in this medicine."

The final challenge, he said, is the fight against fake products in this sector.
