Earthquake hits central Italy; tremor felt in Rome, Naples

The Abruzzo region in central Italy has been hit by an earthquake which was also felt in Rome and Naples, Italian media report.

The earthquake measured 4.4 on the Richter scale and struck at 6.35pm.

The epicentre was located at 14 kilometres of depth between the villages of Villavallelonga and Balsorani, in the Aquila province, which borders the Lazio region.

L'Aquila had been hit by a devastating earthquake in 2009, when 308 people had died.

No reports of damages or injuries were made today.
