A 61-year-old woman from Mellieha suffered serious injuries after she was allegedly hit by a hammer, the police said.

A 61-year-old man, also from Mellieha, is being held under arrest.

The police were informed about the case, which took place in Triq Qasam Barrani, Mellieha, at around noon on Monday.

Police officers and paramedics went on site, finding the woman covered in blood. She was given first aid on site and later taken to Mater Dei Hospital in an ambulance. The woman was hit on the head and face.

The man was arrested on site and taken to the Qawra police station for interrogation. The hammer that was allegedly used in the attack was taken as evidence.

Magistrate Charmaine Galea is leading an inquiry. The police are also investigating the case.
