Monday, 25 November 2019, 09:24 Last update: about 5 years ago

The police have questioned at least one member of the Economy Minister’s secretariat, hours after Minister Chris Cardona was himself summoned to the police headquarters.

The Malta Independent cannot verify reports in other media that two other members of the secretariat were also taken in by the police for interrogation.

Cardona had been questioned, without caution, with an official statement saying that he had been asked to give clarifications as the police investigate the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia.

The development came in the wake of the arrest of Yorgen Fenech last Wednesday. The owner of 17 Black was caught on a yacht which had just left Portomaso, and has since been interrogated at length by the police.
The minister had been a target of Caruana Galizia’s and had sued her on an article in which she wrote that he had been spotted in a brothel in Germany while on official business. The case was dropped in the months following her murder.

A statement released by the Department of Information said Economy Minister Chris Cardona was asked “to provide some clarifications, including on speculations that were made about him in the past”, as part of the ongoing police investigation.

“As he has always done, Minister Cardona, responded immediately to the request by cooperating fully with the police, and remains ready to cooperate further so as to clarify any issues or questions that might crop up as part of the ongoing investigation,” the statement read.
