Updated: EP mission to Malta still set for Monday in spite of S&D MEP demands

The European Parliament mission to Malta is still scheduled to take place as from Monday in spite of demands by German Socialist MEP Birgit Sippel for a debate prior to the mission’s departure.

The European Parliament is scheduled to send an urgent mission to Malta to find first-hand what is taking place in connection the investigations into the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

Nationalist MEP David Casa said last week that there will also be a debate on the situation in Malta in December.

“The European Parliament has just confirmed the decision to send an urgent mission to Malta next week and to hold a debate on the situation in Malta this December,” he said on Wednesday. “This request is also being backed by the Socialists, Muscat’s own political party in Europe.”

But news yesterday was that Sippel had thrown a spoke in the wheels by demanding an “in depth debate” before sending MEPs to Malta, heightening claims from rival parliamentary groups that the S&D are stalling on the Joseph Muscat situation.

The mission is however still on the cards and an agenda is expected to be set on Monday.
