Updated: Academics file GDPR report after OPM officer publishes their ID card number

Wednesday, 4 December 2019, 10:42 Last update: about 5 years ago

Over 300 academics from the University of Malta have called on Outgoing Prime Minister joseph Muscat to resign now or for him to be removed, rather than wait till January for him to step down.

The letter reads: "As academics at the University of Malta we have followed developments in Malta tied to the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia, corruption and institutionalised money laundering. We feel that those entrusted with power have betrayed, in the most serious manner, the trust of Maltese citizens and the international community. In this context, Joseph Muscat must resign or be removed from office with immediate effect. This is necessary for the investigations to proceed without impediment from the Office of the Prime Minister."

Muscat's failure to resign immediately has seen countless protests, and countless calls for him to step down immediately.

Josef Caruana, who works at OPM, commented on the situation attacking the academics before the letter was actually publicly issued, saying that the "supposed intellectuals quickly arrive at conclusions... not in the name of rule of law."

Lecturers told this newsroom that they have filed a report with the GDPR Commissioner because Caruana published the draft letter that contained their ID numbers, and was not the final version meant for publication that did not contain the id card numbers.
