The hockey National League 2019-2020 got underway on Sunday with reigning Champions Qormi Daikin and Floriana Young Stars registering easy wins in their opening games of the campaign.
After their surprise defeat against White Hart in the 3rd place play-off of the Challenge Cup Young Stars responded well with a relatively straight forward victory against Rabat. Rabat on their part seem destined for a tough league campaign. Floriana were two goals to the good by half time with a goal in each of the first two quarters through Leon Gatt and Jamie Mifsud. Kyle Micallef put them three up at the start of the third quarter. Daniel Ellul pulled one back for Rabat but Jamie Mifsud scored again to restore Floriana's three goal lead by the end of the third quarter. Anton Saliba closed the score at 5-1 two minutes from time. James Mizzi amd Paul Brincat umpired the game.
Like Rabat, White Hart seem set for a tough League campaign and on Sunday Qormi Daikin had little difficulty in notching up their first two points of the season. Leading 3-0 at half time Qormi Daikin did not let off and the final score was an emphatic 7-0. Keith Bajada got a hat-trick while Juan Sarcia, Ayrton Falzon, Luke Bajada and Keith Calleja got the other goals. Qormi Daikin also had the opportunity to give a senior debut to two of their upcoming prospects; Nathan Pace Gasan and Neil Genovese. The umpires of this game were Nathan Galea and Karl Chircop.
