Outgoing Prime Minister Joseph Muscat’s wife, Michelle, made it very clear during the Egrant inquiry that she is the “owner of nothing” and that “the story is purposely fabricated.”

Michelle Muscat’s testimony is found in the 1,500 page Egrant inquiry report, published on Tuesday evening by Opposition leader Adrian Delia.

The inquiry was set to investigate if the secret Panama company Egrant Inc was owned by the prime minister, his wife or his family, a claimed made by journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. It found that there was no evidence to this effect.

When asked about the allegations that she was the owner, Muscat said that what was being reported by the media is far from the truth. “I am not the owner. I am the owner of nothing. This story is fabricated, it is purposely fabricated. I have never had anything to do with any person there, nor have I ever had companies or bank accounts abroad.”

She claimed that the only bank accounts she has are in Malta, one at HSBC and another which is a joint with her husband and children at Bank of Valletta.

When Muscat was asked by then-magistrate Aaron Bugeja if she had signed any documents related to Egrant, Muscat insisted she never had, adding that she never had any discussions on such matters.

When asked whether she ever met with Nexia BT’s Brian Tonna, she said that she knew Tonna from the time when her husband was an MEP, and that he was a ‘somewhat’ accountant, but she was never involved in his work, and she never went to his office.

When asked specifically whether Muscat has any negotiations with Michelle Buttigieg, she replied: “So I know Michelle Buttigieg as a friend. I do not have any form of business with her, what we had was a hobby. Michelle lived and still lives in New York. When she stopped her career in Tourism in New York because she was pregnant, she began making jewellery. At that time I became friends with her.”

She continued that she became friends with Buttigieg as she was the wife of someone who used to go to the Labour Party Club in New York. She explained that, at the time, she used to work as an assistant for Alfred Sant, who at the time was Opposition Leader and had gone on an official visit to New York. “The official visit was organised by Mr William Buttigieg and I got to know of Michelle Buttigieg through him.”

She went on to describe how the pair would organise parties and ‘soirees’ where they would hold talks about jewellery.
