Gozitan football player admits assault on assistant referee, granted bail

A football player has been granted bail after admitting to having slightly injured an assistant referee during a football match in Gozo on Saturday.

The 26-year-old, from Zebbug, Gozo, was also accused of assaulting another person and of breaching the peace and swearing in public.

The incident took place at the Kercem football ground during Gozo Second Division match was between Oratory Youths and Sannat Lions. The game was abandoned in the 87th minute. The referee said the player had first tried to assault him and, when stopped, the man assaulted one of his assistants.

The payer was arraigned on Sunday before Magistrate Simone Grech. He pleaded guilty to the charges and was granted bail subject to a number of conditions.

Inspector Bernard Charles Spiteri prosecuted.
