Unstoppable Debono rules the Three Cities

Maria Vella--Galea Monday, 13 January 2020, 11:28 Last update: about 6 years ago

Unstoppable seems best to describe Gozitan athlete Charlton Debono who is currently in his best form ever. Debono registered a time of 30 minutes 48 seconds in the Intersport Three Cities 10km road race, the best time ever registered in this race since its inception three years ago. Considered to be one of the most scenic routes on the island, the route is fast and flat. Despite a threat of rain, Sunday's weather provided good racing conditions for nearly 200 athletes taking part.

From the onset, Debono set the pace but Dillon Cassar and Mark Herrera were not ones to give up the fight easily. At the 5k mark, Debono and Cassar were hot on each others' heels though in the end Debono built a slight gap to edge Cassar and cross the finish line first, with Debono registering his first sub 31 minute timing for this distance - this result was an improvement of nearly four minutes from the time registered on this course in 2018.  Meanwhile Cassar who crossed the finish line twelve seconds behind Debono, improved on his 2019 time by nearly three minutes.  In third place was Herrera.  Herrera has taken part in all editions of this race, registering improved timings all along.

Josann Attard Pulis set a relaxed pace and created a comfortable gap over second placed Jolene Debattista. Attard Pulis, despite not registering her best time on this course, still performed well to finish the race in 39 minutes 20 seconds.  Debattista, finished the race in 43 minutes 23 seconds - an improvement of thirty seconds from her last participation in 2018.  Eleven seconds later, Charyl Fava claimed third place on the podium.  Fava, has been a regular participant in the Series and has been quietly registering improved timings along the way.

Prizes and Trophies to the Age Group and Overall Winners were presented by Race Director Charlie Demanuele immediately after the race.
