A seminar for second year Accounting Advanced level students, entitled 'Accounting beyond numbers: exploring the multidimensionality of accounting', was held on 24 January at the Valletta Campus. Students were addressed by Professor Frank Bezzina, Dean of the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accounting (FEMA); Professor Peter Baldacchino, Head of Department of Accountancy within FEMA, and Mr Emanuel Mizzi, Coordinator for Business Education who is in charge of the Masters in Teaching and Learning in Business Education at the Faculty of Education. These provided information about the different pathways available for accounting students. Words of encouragement and advice were also conveyed by Mr Darren Borg, a second year accounting student teacher, who is also a past student of the Accounting Department at Junior College.
Students were also provided with the opportunity to meet accountancy and audit firm representatives who engaged students in interactive workshops dealing with various facets of accounting, including the development of content knowledge and soft skills, awareness of the different career opportunities, and also delved into issues concerning smart recruitment of workers, taxation and business ethics, amongst others.
Awards were also presented to students who over their course of studies have distinguished themselves as outstanding in other areas; namely persistence, effort and assisting fellow students. The seminar is the brainchild of the Department of Accounting at Junior College who also joined forces with Sir M. A. Refalo Gozo Sixth Form to make this event available for Gozitan sixth form students studying Accounting at Advanced Level. This initiative was one of several organised during the Junior College Careers Expo Week organised between 20 and 24 January 2020.
