Time to ban it: Delia refuses to be consulted on IIP scheme regulator

Friday, 31 January 2020, 11:50 Last update: about 5 years ago

Opposition Leader Adrian Delia is refusing to be consulted by the Prime Minister on who should be the regulator of the IIP scheme, known more as the Maltese passport scheme.

Writing on Facebook, Delia said that he had told Robert Abela that the time has come for the scheme to be scrapped.

The Individual Investor Programme has caused so much damage to Malta’s reputation, Delia said, and as Opposition leader he had refused to be consulted by the government.

The Office of the Regulator of the Individual Investor Programme is currently headed by Carmel L. De Gabriele.

In a statement, the PN said the Opposition Leader had written to the PM telling him the Opposition saw no need to be consulted on the appointment of a regulator for a scheme that continues to inflict great damage on the country.

It referred to recent confirmed reports about people who had bought Maltese citizenship and who have been found guilty of serious crimes, like money laundering, fraud, contraband, corruption and tax evasion.

For these reasons, the Opposition is insisting that the passport sale scheme should be stopped with immediate effect, once and for all.
