Pope Francis set to visit Malta

Saturday, 8 February 2020, 20:13 Last update: about 5 years ago

Pope Francis is set to visit Malta in the coming months after being invited by the Maltese Curia as well as the government.

No date has been set but the Vatican is planning the visit as one of several the Pope will be making in the short-term.

It is possible that more information will be given by the Maltese Church on the feast of St Paul, which falls on Monday.

The Pope was invited to visit Malta during a visit to Rome by president George Vella, while Archbishop Charles Scicluna also invited the pontiff.

If it happens, it will be the fourth visit of a pope to Malta in the last 30 years. Pope John Paul II had visited Malta in 1990 and 2001, with Pope Benedict XVI came to Malta in 2010.
