A pillion rider was grievously injured on Monday evening after a biker crashed into road diversion structures, the police said.

The biker was also seriously hurt in the accident, which took place in Tal-Barrani Road, limits of Tarxien, at 8pm.

The biker, a 25-year-old of Msida, crashed into structures set up on the road to signal diversions because of a road project in the area. The rider, a 19-year-old woman resident in Rabat, was seriously hurt as she was thrown off the bike.

Magistrate Astrid May Grima is leading an inquiry.
