New football ground, hostel and elderly home filed in single application for Marsaxlokk

An application has been filed for the construction of an 11-a-side football pitch, the construction of a hostel for football players and the construction of an elderly people's home on Marsaxlokk land indicated as being located outside the development zone.

The application is for the site of the Marsaxlokk Football Ground parking area and public garden on Triq il-Kavallerizza, Triq il-Port Ruman, Triq Ghajn Osiris, Xatt is-Sajjieda.

The project description reads that the existing parking area will be retained, and that an overlying fully-fledged 11-a-side football ground (UEFA Category 1 pitch) including all necessary amenities such as seating, news stand and underling Marsaxlokk football club halls, offices and headquarters will be built.

It also reads that "construction of a multi-purpose court including adjacent players physical preparation area," would be included, as will the "construction of a hostel for team players and seating stands for the existing Marsaxlokk pitch."

The very same application also proposes the excavation and construction of an old people's home with an integrated and enlarged public garden. "Construction of additional facilities for the locality including a child care centre, Marsaxlokk social club, and sport related shops, pharmacy and physiotherapy clinics."

The application was filed by Marsaxlokk FC and the total site area listed on the application form is 22,500sqm. The form also lists the site as being government owned.

The plans for the elderly people's home part of the project also show an indoor heated pool area and massage rooms, and will rise four floors (including ground level).

The hostel will also rise 3 floors (including ground level) and will include a pool on the roof.

According to official Marsaxlokk local plans available on the PA website, the objectives of the area are to provide better community, leisure, sports and playground facilities in a landscaped setting.
