They ridiculed us because we are organising shopping sprees for people, in a surreal moment in time where people are struggling to have a decent and clean income. They ridiculed us because we are advertising this initiative on the party’s station; pasta, tins of corned beef, tuna and tomato paste. They ridiculed us because we are offering two different types of shopping; a seventy-five-euro big shopping and a smaller forty euro one. They tried to ridicule us because amongst the supplies one finds in the shopping, are jars of coffee, a dozen of eggs and sliced bread. Is this worth to be a news item?!!
They also made a fuss about the dire financial situation of the Nationalist Party. This is no surprise as this fact is well known. It seems however that the Labour Party has truly forgotten its past! The Nationalist Party in Government never made any shady deal on the fourth floor. The Nationalist Government had focused all its energy on the country and in my opinion, it was a big mistake for the party to have kept going on with the ‘business as usual’ attitude.
The debts continued to be inherited, therefore a number of initiatives were introduced by some people within the Nationalist Party, including Deputy Leader Robert Arrigo and others, who are striving to keep the clock ticking, and instead they are being ridiculed and made fun of by those who in the past went through the same situation.
I clearly remember these times in the Labour Party during Dr. Alfred Sant’s tenure, with Manwel Cuschieri knocking doors and begging people to help out so that the work of the Party could continue. What's wrong with that? I remember the comedies being held in the PL headquarters to raise money for the Party, what’s wrong with that? I remember Labour MPs were ordered to give a substantial amount out of their honorarium. I remember a Super One worker running after the Deputies and after the Production Houses to be able to fork out the workers ’wages. And don't they remember how many workers left Super One because of their fears and the financial crisis they had?
But Super One News did not tell us about the gift that the Labour government gave to the Labour Party in the form of Australia Hall, said gift that bore fruit for the Labour Party. We were not told that the “PL Sells Australia Hall to settle debts, keeps Raffles” so that he could pay off a debt that had been accumulating for years on end. May I remind you and also for the record of the readers, that this sale was possible only after the Labour government dropped a lawsuit against the Labour Party in October 2013, a few months after the Labour victory in the general election, so that with so he gave this property as a gift.
May I also remind you how the sale was made to the company A.H. Development Limited which is owned by the same owners of Tamarac Limited. In this agreement the Labour Party paid its debt on furniture it bought for the Labour’s Ċentru Nazzjonali, got rid of another debt worth a quarter of a million Euros as well as regained the rights on the site known as the Raffles Disco, a site that is described as the most expensive property owned by the Labour Party in St. Andrews. A couple of lawsuits between the Labor Party and Tamarac Limited have been dropped. The story does not end here, but I remember when the Labour Party had declared a low value to avoid tax, and former Prime Minister Muscat gave the worst example to the Maltese people: that of evading tax. Because if the Labour Party blatantly evades the tax, with what moral authority can the Labour Government claim that the people should pay tax. There are a series of other scandals, one worse than the other, that Super One News forgot to tell us, but then they try to fool their followers with a simple shopping that is being delivered in the comfort of your home, and the clock keeps ticking in a clean way.
Do you know what Super One News left out? That from from the debt-ridden Dar Ċentrali, we tried to feed thousands of families who could not make ends meet, helped homeless families and helped those whose homes had collapsed.
The Nationalist Party was never bought by anyone and perhaps that is why it is in a troubled financial situation. On the contrary, the Labour Party brought the country to its knees, as it is paying the price of the promises it made to the electorate before each election on the famous 4th floor.
Therefore, in my eyes, Labour can never set a good example. It can never have any moral authority. They are like teachers who do not know how to read or write. They are no longer credible, and if they don't notice this, let us all tell them with one voice: You are not credible!
