Covid-19: Delivery room restrictive measures could soon be eased - Fearne

Fathers will be again be allowed in the delivery room for the entire labour process if the Covid-19 situation remains under control, Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne said on Wednesday.

Currently, fathers are only allowed to enter the delivery room during the final phase. The measure was put in place some weeks back as a measure to prevent the spread of infection.

Speaking in Parliament, Fearne said the measure could be rolled back in the coming weeks.

Last Monday some of the restrictive measures that were put in place at the beginning of the pandemic were relaxed, with a number of shops being allowed to re-open, although shoppers have to wear facemasks.

"Once we ensure that we do not have an increase in Coronavirus cases due to the relaxing of measures, we can start to ease other restrictive measures," Fearne said, adding that allowing fathers in the delivery room throughout the entire birthing process will be one of them.

"The advice given to us by professionals was to put in place a measure whereby fathers are only allowed inside the delivery room for the last few minutes," he said.

If the public continues to cooperate and abide by the instructions given by the health authorities and the situation is kept under control, more restrictive measures could be eased, he said.
