The car belonging to PN MEP candidate and Floriana FC general secretary Dione Borg was set on fire last night, he said on his Facebook page.

The vehicle was destroyed.

Borg thanked the members of the Civil Protection Department who were called to put out the blaze.

He said that the person who set the car ablaze was captured on cameras escaping on an electric scooter.

Contacted by The Malta Independent, Borg said that he had left the Floriana FC club to his home in Attard last night, and soon after he parked his car and entered his house he was alerted by his dog barking.

“I went to look out of the window to see what had happened, and I saw the car on fire and a man escaping on one of these electric scooters”, he said.

“The police came immediately as they were coincidentially on a patrol around the area, and checked CCTV.  They told me that on one of them they had spotted a man emptying a jerrycan on the car and setting it on fire”, he continued.

Asked whether he thought it may be down to political or footballing reasons, Borg said that he would not tie it to anything, noting that it would be irresponsible to do so.  He said that police investigations are ongoing and that he will let them take their course.

Borg, who has for years worked as a journalist with the PN media, contested the election for the European Parliament in 2019.

He is also the author of a book, Liberta Mhedda, which speaks about the difficult last years of the Labour administration in the 1980s.

Borg is also greatly involved in the running of Floriana FC as its general secretary and representative on the MFA as a council member. It is likely that Floriana will be declared champions today after the MFA last week decided that the premier league will not continue because of the Coronavirus pandemic.
