Wednesday, 15 July 2020, 10:34 Last update: about 6 years ago

PN MP Karol Aquilina has told Opposition Leader Adrian Delia to follow Louis Galea's advice and resign, and that it would be a mistake to ignore the recent votes of no confidence.

Louis Galea early on Wednesday issued a statement urging Delia to step down from his post as PN Leader. This followed on from a vote in the PN's Executive Committee in the early hours of Wednesday morning, where the majority declared that Delia no longer held their trust.

Walking into Parliament at 9am, Aquilina said that Galea's advice should be followed. He was also asked about Delia's statement about the vote, who said that it was just a declaratory vote and had no other effect. "It is a big mistake to ignore the party organs, like the Parliamentary Group and the Executive, when they take a decision like that."

PN MP Hermann Schiavone was also asked about Delia's statement, that the vote was just a declaration that had no effect.  He said that other voices on the matter have already been sounded and that he thinks everyone including Adrian Delia need to see what is in the country's interest  as well as what is in the interest of the party. "The country needs a strong Opposition, and to have that we need a united strong PN, that is something which unfortunately Adrian Delia was not able to do."

He said that in the current circumstances the best solution is "what former Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Louis Galea said, for there to be an open leadership race including Delia if he wants to recontest."

PN MP Carm Mifsud Bonnici was also quizzed while walking into Parliament, but all he said was "now we will see."

PN MP Ivan Bartolo was asked about the statement made by Louis Galea. All Bartolo said that everyone spoke in their own way. With regards to the comment regarding the vote having no effect, he said "now that he has to see to."

PN Whip Robert Cutajar remained silent as he walked into Parliament, refusing to say whether he has trust in him or not.

PN MP Karl Gouder said that who has to take the message has to take it.

Independent MP Marlene Farrugia said that the PN deserves much better.  She said that Delia should have a good look at the polls and the desire of the electorate.

"Everyone agrees that we need a credible opposition and a credible opposition leader, but at the moment there isn't one", she said.

Asked by this newsroom what the next step should be, Farrugia said that the next step should be an open leadership race where the members would once again take part in the process, and where the PN would have a chance to choose a leader who can guarantee not only making the party a viable opposition, but also an alternative government.
