A 23-year-old man was arrested after he tried to run over two policemen who pulled him over for speeding in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
At around 1am, policemen from the Rapid Intervention Unit spotted an Opel Astra driving dangerously in Triq il-Konvoy ta’ Santa Marija in Mqabba.
The two policemen were on a patrol at the time, and had to move to the side of the road to avoid a collision. It was at this point that the police began following the car, however the driver ignored the sirens and instead increased his speed.
The police managed to stop the car in Triq il-Belt Valletta, also in Mqabbad, and ordered the driver to immediately vacate the car. However, the driver attempted to escape by driver over the policemen.
The police attempted to hold down the driver, and managed to get him out of the car. The driver however remained aggressive and did not cooperate, also alleging that he had ingested some illegal substances.
An ambulance was called and the man was taken to Mater Dei Hospital for the necessary care.
The policemen meanwhile were taken to the Floriana Health Centre for care, where they were certified as having suffered light injuries.
Police investigations are ongoing.
