In a note written on a hospital bed, Melvin Theuma said he stabbed himself multiple times because his evidence in the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia was being doubted, Times of Malta reports..

The man who has been given a presidential pardon to give details on the plot to assassninate jouirnalist Daphne Caruana Galizia told the inquiring magistrate there was no third-party involvement in the incident on Tuesday night.

Theuma was found with his neck slashed and serious injuries to the abdomen in his Swieqi apartment on Tuesday night. He has been giving evidence in cases related to the murder, and was due to testify again the following day.

In its official statement, the police said that Theuma tried to harm himself and there was no evidence that third parties were involved.

Inquiring magistrate Astrid May Grima visited Theuma in the intensive care unit of Mater Dei Hospital on Friday.

Theuma is unable to speak because of the injuries sustained and used a handwritten note to communicate with the magistrate.

Explaining his reason for his apparent suicide attempt, Theuma first wrote that he felt remorse and then wrote that he felt his testimony was not been considered as credible.
